Friends, neighbors, and fellow Trojans,
Last night, the City Council unanimously overrode Mayor Mantello's veto of tenant protections, commonly known as Good Cause Eviction.
Rejection of the mayor's veto is a victory for the residents of Troy and a reminder of how representative government should work: putting people before politics, including the approximately two-thirds of Collar City residents who are renters.
I applaud my council colleagues for their hard work to take this legislation across the finish line, and the advocates and residents who worked tirelessly to inform, educate, and engage their neighbors in support. We hear your voices and will continue to listen.
Tenant protections were an issue that residents brought to the previous City Council but was defeated by the prior Republican majority. Supporters of Good Cause Eviction made the legislation a major campaign issue, and voters subsequently elected a full Democratic council in November 2025.
With ongoing concerns over a lack of transparency from the mayor's office—including financial issues, labor contracts, lead pipe replacement, or Flock cameras—the council will continue to exercise our oversight role as a check and balance to the administration, including the use of vetos when necessary. We urge the mayor to reengage with the council on affordable housing and other programs that directly benefit Troy residents and families.
Stay tuned for a more detailed breakdown of Thursday night's agenda next week.
Onward,
Sue Steele
Council President
