Friends, neighbors, and fellow Trojans,

Last Thursday, the City Council unanimously passed the Good Cause Eviction ordinance. This landmark legislation means Troy joins 19 other communities across New York State in adopting this vital measure. It is an important moment for our community, affirming our commitment to stabilizing neighborhoods, supporting affordable housing, and protecting the health and well-being of Troy residents and families.

I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the residents and advocates who worked tirelessly to bring this legislation to a successful vote.

While the Mayor has indicated she intends to veto the measure, the Council remains united in its commitment to overriding this decision. We will continue to prioritize the stability and well-being of our residents.

None of this work is about us as individuals. We are here because we care about our community and the people who make it such a special place. Thank you for your continued engagement and trust in our work.

Onward,

Sue Steele
Council President

Council Legislative Address

On Thursday evening, I also delivered the Council's annual Legislative Address. In my remarks, I outlined our key priorities for the coming year, including:

  • Financial Transparency: Increasing openness around Troy's finances.
  • Infrastructure: Accelerating the replacement of lead pipes.
  • Housing Safety: Creating a Residential Occupancy Permit program to ensure rental unit safety.
  • Waterfront Investment: Funding the Riverwalk Park North Extension project to further expand public access to the Hudson River.
  • Effective Communication: establishing a professional social media policy for the city's online communications.

We also addressed the ongoing lawsuit regarding the relocation of City Hall. Residents and taxpayers deserve clarity on the status of this project, and we will be convening a committee meeting soon to question the administration directly.

Frear Park Improvements

The city is currently seeking construction bids for the former Park Pub restaurant space. Earlier this year, the Council secured concessions from the Mayor to reduce borrowing costs and prioritize the reconstruction of the restaurant and playground.

I will note the mayor agreed with my earlier suggestion to locate new restaurant at the site of the former Park Pub. This will better accommodate neighbors, hockey families, and golfers.

As the crown jewel of Troy's green spaces, Frear Park deserves improvements that benefit every resident.
